PERSONALITY

Ego is the logical, rational, realistic part of the personality, Reality Principle.  It considers the constraints of the real world in determining appropriate times, places and objects of gratification of the id's wishes. The art of the possible is its guide and sometime compromise must be made.

Superego, the moral component of the personality.  The Superego has two parts:
(1)  conscience consists of all the behaviors for which a child has been punished or feels guilty.
(2)  the ego ideal comprises the behavior for which feels pride and satisfaction. In its quest for moral perfection, the superego sets guidelines.  The superego judges not only behavior, but also thought, feelings, and wishes.

Id is the only part of the personality that is present at birth, and it is often compared to a newborn that never grows up.  It is inherited, primitive, inaccessible, and unconscious.  The id contains:
(1)  life instincts, which are the sexual instincts and the biological urges, such as hunger and thirst;
(2)  the death instinct, which accounts for aggressive and destructive impulses.  Operates according to the Pleasure principle, the id tries to seek pleasure, avoid pain, and gain immediate gratification.  The id is the source of the libido, the psychic energy that fuels the entire personality; the id can only fantasize and demand.
